Description

Felix enriched the repertoire for violin with one of the most significant works of the 19th century, his Violin Concerto in E Minor, Op. 64 MWV O 14. He also completed three sonatas for violin and piano, in which the violin part is set technically and tonally demanding, yet rewarding to play. Mendelssohn invariably relied on the support of a skilled and trusted violinist. Thus, Eduard Ritz accompanied the creation of the Sonata in F Minor, Op. 4 MWV Q 12 (1825). From the mid-1830s, Mendelssohn's friend from his youth in Berlin, Ferdinand David, took over this role and became an influential advisor, for instance on the great Sonata in F Major (MWV Q 26), of which two versions have survived. The Sonata in F Major MWV Q 7 is an early work by Mendelssohn from 1820.

Works:

  • Violin Sonata No. 2 in F Minor, MWV Q 12, Op. 4
  • Violin Sonata No. 1 in F Major, MWV Q 7
  • Violin Sonata No. 3 in F Major (1838 - First Version), MWV Q 26
  • Violin Sonata No. 3 in F Major (1839 - Second Version), MWV Q 26
